Residency Photos

New! Improved! I've added some photos from my day trip to NYC, and one more of me hard at work. I'm still not sure there are any prize winners amongst them... ;)

Photos at 'the Plant'

Here's some views from in and around the IBM International Technical Support Organization (ITSO), Poughkeepsie Centre.
Name What it is Details
pokblg8.jpg Building 008, which houses the ITSO (I'm on the 2nd floor, which is the middle row of windows). JPEG, 162KB
pokblg1.jpg Building 012, the main (first) building at the site (I thought it was Building 001, but it's not). JPEG, 184KB
pokoff01.jpg My desk! Those who have worked with me will not believe, since it's tidy... ;) JPEG, 160KB
pokvic01.jpg Me, hard at work at my tidy desk, on a good day (I'm smiling) JPEG, 149KB
pokroh01.jpg Part of the "Roll of Honour" in the Center Corridor in Building 008. Each little square you see on the wall is a photo of a previous resident. JPEG, 170KB
pokroh02.jpg More of the "Roll of Honour". These are some of the Redbooks published recently (their covers, at least). JPEG, 187KB
pokroh03.jpg More of the "Roll of Honour". These are photos of current residents (I'm bottom row, second from the left!). JPEG, 183KB

The Residence Inn

IBM puts us up in a place called the Residence Inn, in Fishkill (about ten miles from the plant). The name is a coincidence: Residence Inn is one of the Marriott brands in the US, and has nothing to do with ITSO or residencies (as I found out).
Skip this section of photos if you don't need to see what the rooms look like in a Residence Inn.
resinn01.jpg The most useful piece of furniture in the place, at least on a residency. Not much time to do anything but sleep when the day is finally over. Photo was taken standing at the front door of the room. JPEG, 169KB
resinn02.jpg TV, work desk, lounge chair. What else can I say...? For those who like to know where things go together, the 'bedroom' is to the right of this shot. JPEG, 176KB
resinn03.jpg The kitchen. Servery/breakfast bar. I'm standing next to the TV from the previous photo, and it's the same lounge in the bottom of the shot. The 'bedroom' is to the left. JPEG, 180KB

New York City

Simon Williams and I went on a day trip to NYC. I didn't go photo-crazy, but here's a few pictures that prove that I've been there (or employed someone to take photos for me -- no, it was easier to go myself).
times01.jpg What it's all about. Peace, Love and Linux, high above Times Square. JPEG, 190KB
times02.jpg Times Square, looking north. This was about 9:30am on a Sunday morning, so it's a bit more subdued than it would usually be (or so I'm told). JPEG, 188KB
times03.jpg Looking south this time. The video screens on the building in the distance are each as large as the screens at the footy grounds at home - and they're not the largest ones in NYC.
This view is possibly most famous for the New Year's Eve celebrations: the pole at the top is where the new year's globe descends at midnight.
JPEG, 168KB
stalib01.jpg The Statue of Liberty, from Battery Park (I was too cheap to pay to go over). The Staten Island Ferry is the vessel in mid-ground. JPEG, 161KB
brklynbr.jpg The Brooklyn Bridge, from the observation deck of the World Trade Centre. The east end of the Manhattan Bridge is also visible. JPEG, 189KB
brklyn01.jpg A wider view, the borough of Brooklyn to the right of shot, the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, and the majestic (?) East River (which is technically not actually a river anyway). JPEG, 173KB
nyc02.jpg The Big Apple. This is looking north from the observation floor of the World Trade Centre. Although it looks hazy, the visibility was excellent. You have to remember we're 107 floors up, and that the Empire State Building (tallest point, centre of shot) is nearly 9km away... JPEG, 166KB
sacks5av.jpg This was a photo opp for two reasons: the signpost that says "5 AV", and the building with more American flags that I'd seen at one time. It wasn't until after I took the photo that I found out the building is Sacks department store, a name recognised almost anywhere in the world. JPEG, 180KB
grandcen.jpg The main hall of Grand Central Station. One of those places I just always wanted to see. The clock in the middle of the hall is one of the most recognised meeting places in the city (apparently). JPEG, 187KB
